Domokos, the ancient Thaumacus, is a unicipality in Phthiotis, Greece. The town is built on a mountain slope overlooking the plain of Thessaly, 38km from the city of Lamia. According to the 2011 census its population is 1.531 inhabitants.
Domokos got its name from the ancient city Thaumacus which was built in the same place. The most etymological name comes from the marvelous goddess that had its position towards the Thessalian plain that was spread in front of her.
That place, was one of the cities that belonged to the wife of the emperor Alexios C’, Empress Efrosini. After the Byzantine conquest of the Franks and his distribution, Domokos came under the authority of the King of Thessaloniki, Boniface.
In 1493 Domokos was captured by the Turks. It was liberated in 1881 but it got captured again, after a fierce battle on May 17, 1897, during the Greek-Turkish War of 1897. It was originally in the Prefecture of Larissa, as Domokos District. However, because of the 1899 BCN Law was annexed to the Prefecture of Fthiotida and since then it has been part of it and hence of Central Greece.
In the former province of Domokos, there were the villages of Agios Stefanos (formerly Nezeros), Perivoli (formerly Delli), Makrirachi, Ombriaki, Xyniada and others.
