On the 5th of May, 1897, in the Domokos area, the main battle of the Greek-Turkish war was held.
By the Treaty of Berlin [16-6-1880] and by the Convoy Ambassador (10-4-1881), the new Greek-Turkish borders were defined. Thus, since 1881 the whole Thessaly was liberated by the Turks and has since belonged to Greece. In 1893 the then Prime Minister and finance minister, Charilaos Trikoupis, declared the bankruptcy of the state and suspended the fulfillment of Greece’s obligations towards the lenders of previous loans.
There were repeated but fruitless negotiations between Greece and the bondholders (English, French and German). Finally, with the suggestion of the bondholders, Turkey declared the war against Greece in 1897. In this war a great battle was struck in the Domokos area.
There are a lot memorials in Domokos about the fight took place on Domokos, but the most known is the memorial called “Battle Of Domokos” and the Turkish cemetery.
