Ancient city “Melitea”

The location of the ancient Melitaia, one of the most important cities of Achaia, Fthiotida, is identified with the ancient city that is built on the northern foothills of the Othry mountain range, to the east of the modern homonymous municipal district of Domokos, where parts of the ancient wall surrounded the city, 3,5 km long.

Melitaia’s position in antiquity was particularly important and strategic since it was located on one of the two main roads of the ancient Greek world that led from Thessaly to Sterea and vice versa.

The strong fortified Melitaia, with a wall thickness of 3.80m. approximately, had a fairly large area, covering about 462 square kilometers, the limits of which are known with sufficient precision thanks to epigraphic testimonies.
